Carmen Miller

2018 Shakaat Artist-in-Residence

Carmen Miller is a Metis artisan who lives in Hinton, Alberta. She has always loved trying new forms of art and craft work. Carmen taught herself how to make simple beaded items at the age of eight and has been beading ever since.

She learned the art of moose hair and caribou hair tufting 24 years ago and it quickly became one of her favourite art mediums. Her tuftings are usually on wearable items such as moccasins, mittens, and jewelry and are combined with beadwork.

Carmen has a deep respect for culture and tradition and keeping her culture alive through her artwork and teaching is a goal of hers. Other traditional arts she works on is fish scale art, birch bark baskets, and porcupine quillwork.
