Virginia Smith
2018/2019/2020/2021 Shakaat Artist-in-ResidenceVirginia is an Inland Tlingit of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation and she belongs to Dakhl’awèdí clan. Virginia was born and raised in Carcross and is now currently teaching at the Elijiah Smith Elementary School, as well as sewing and beading teaching the children is also her passion. Virginia was very close to her grandmother Lucy Wren who taught her everything she knows about sewing as they used to spend hours together sewing. Virginia passes what she learned down to her numerous nieces and nephews. Virginia taught herself to quilt and spends many hours making quilts for her family each niece and nephew has their own special quilt made by her. As previously stated her greatest passion is beading, teaching and sewing traditional clothing.
