Anne Spice
2021 Shakaat Artist-in-ResidenceAnne Spice is inland Tlingit, a member of Kwanlin Dun First Nation. She grew up in Southern Alberta in the territories of the Niitsitapi, Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina, and is excited to return to her ancestral homelands for this residency. She is an anti-colonial organizer, land defender, educator and poet. Anne is a hand-poked tattoo artist, and her tattoo practice was learned on the Indigenous frontlines, where she tattooed land defenders, friends, and herself. Anne is passionate about reclaiming Indigenous tattooing, including the revival of tattooing as a ceremonial practice and one that builds reciprocity and relation in community. She lives in Tkaronto, where she is a professor of Indigenous environmental knowledges in the department of geography and environmental studies at X University.
